(High Fever)
(Headache)
(Muscle and Joint Pain)
(Pain Behind the Eyes)

Dengue Deaths Rise to 77 in Sri Lanka – Health Authorities Issue Warning

Sri Lanka is continuing to face a significant dengue (Dengue) burden in 2026, with the number of reported dengue cases exceeding 99,000. According to the latest available data, 77 dengue-related deaths have been reported in the country this year.

According to data available up to 24 September 2026, a total of 99,634 dengue cases had been reported across Sri Lanka, while 77 dengue-related deaths had also been recorded.

Dengue Situation Requires Continued Attention

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted mainly by Aedes mosquitoes. The disease remains an important public health concern in Sri Lanka, particularly during periods when mosquito breeding conditions increase.

The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) conducts disease surveillance, vector surveillance, mosquito-control activities, early diagnosis and case-management programmes to reduce the impact of dengue.

The number of dengue cases can change rapidly depending on weather conditions, mosquito breeding and other factors. Therefore, the latest official health information should be followed when assessing the current situation.

Western Province Records the Highest Number of Cases

According to the latest figures available up to 24 September 2026, the Western Province has recorded the highest number of dengue cases in Sri Lanka.

A total of approximately 52,340 cases have been reported from the Western Province.

At district level, the reported figures include:

  • Gampaha District – 21,136 cases
  • Colombo District – 19,569 cases

Significant numbers of dengue cases have also been reported from districts including Kandy, Kalutara and Matara.

July Recorded a High Number of Dengue Cases

Monthly data for 2026 indicate that dengue cases increased significantly during June and July.

According to the available figures, 29,964 dengue cases were reported in July 2026, making it one of the highest monthly totals recorded during the year.

Around 21,533 cases were reported in June, while approximately 10,155 cases were reported in August.

Dengue cases have also continued to be reported during September.

Remove Mosquito Breeding Sites Around Your Home

Dengue mosquitoes can breed in relatively small collections of stagnant water. Therefore, keeping the home and surrounding environment free of potential breeding sites is an important part of dengue prevention.

People should regularly:

  • Remove stagnant water around homes.
  • Dispose of or properly cover unused containers, cans, bottles and other items that can collect rainwater.
  • Keep water-storage containers properly covered.
  • Check roofs, gutters, gardens and drains for trapped water.
  • Remove accumulated water after rainfall.
  • Take part in community mosquito-control activities.

Even small containers containing stagnant water can become potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Do Not Ignore Fever

The early symptoms of dengue can sometimes resemble those of other viral infections.

Common symptoms may include:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • General weakness and fatigue

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical advice, particularly if the fever is persistent or the person's condition begins to worsen.

The Critical Phase Can Occur After the Fever Falls

One important feature of dengue is that the critical phase (Critical Phase) can occur around the time the fever begins to decrease.

Therefore, a reduction in fever does not necessarily mean that the patient is completely out of danger.

Patients should follow medical advice carefully and seek urgent medical attention if warning signs or deterioration occur.

Early Medical Care Is Important

Early recognition and appropriate clinical management are important in reducing complications associated with severe dengue.

Health authorities continue to emphasize disease surveillance, early diagnosis, appropriate patient monitoring and proper clinical management.

People should avoid self-medication and should follow the advice of qualified healthcare professionals when dengue is suspected.

Important Dengue Figures for 2026

According to the latest available data up to 24 September 2026:

  • Total dengue cases: 99,634
  • Dengue-related deaths: 77
  • Province with the highest number of cases: Western Province
  • Cases reported from Western Province: 52,340
  • Cases reported from Gampaha District: 21,136
  • Cases reported from Colombo District: 19,569
  • Cases reported in July: 29,964

These figures may change as new cases and deaths are reported and official surveillance data are updated.

Public Cooperation Is Essential

Dengue prevention is not the responsibility of the health authorities alone. Individuals, families, schools, workplaces and communities all have an important role to play in reducing mosquito breeding sites.

Keeping the surrounding environment clean, removing stagnant water, following public-health guidance and seeking medical advice promptly when symptoms occur can help reduce the risk of severe dengue and dengue-related complications.

With dengue cases remaining high in Sri Lanka, the public is encouraged to remain alert and continue dengue-prevention measures regularly rather than only during outbreaks.
